The Regional Municipality of Durham, informally referred to as Durham Region, is a regional municipality located in Southern Ontario east of Toronto, Ontario. It has an area of approximately 2,500 square kilometres. The towns of Pickering and Ajax, and the township of Uxbridge, make up part of the Toronto Census Metropolitan Area, with the communities of Oshawa, Whitby, and Clarington make up the Oshawa Census Metropolitan Area. The regional government is headquartered in Whitby. The southern portion of the region, on Lake Ontario is primarily suburban in nature, forming the eastern end of the 905 belt of suburbs around Toronto. The northern area comprises rural areas and small towns.One of the fastest growing regions in the province of Ontario over the past 20 years Durham Region has become and bustling urban area north of Lake Ontario offering the same amenities as the city. Tansportation is excellent in this area offering a strong go bus or train route into many parts of the city. Driving in rush hour to downtown Toronto is teadious but outside of rush hour traffic it is only 30 minutes to the cities core areas. Each of the smaller towns in this region are very self sufficient and have grown at a similar speed. One of the difference in the growth of Durham region and many other nearby communities is that the amenities have grown at the same rate. Schools, parks, sporting associations and clubs are a plenty. Shopping, restaurants and malls are everywhere. Big box malls are a plenty ofering the residence everything to meet their needs. No reason to go further than Durham for all your needs.
